The Island

Actually watched this movie last Friday, but only now I have the time to write about it :-P

My god, the mayhem caused in this movie is really something, I really lost count of how many innocent civilians got killed during the whole 'bad guys' chasing the two lead actor/actress sequence.

The only thing I like about this movie is the music, it's quite inspiring at times, or maybe I'm just a sucker for choired/vocal soundtracks lol.

*** SPOILER below ***

For a movie with the title 'The Island', it's rather surprising to not find any shots of the 'Island' throughout the movie, other than some random images of some island-like environments. How terribly misleading! :-P

Fantastic 4

Bad news (for me at least) is.. Mr. Torch kinda looks like that first runner up in Manhunt, who in my opinion looks way too 'pink'.

Good news is, they weren't kidding in the movie when they say he's an underwear male model! My lil bro was dripping wet just looking at his numerous (yes, NUMEROUS) scenes of that hot naked bod, in various 'kinky' situations to boot!

Not as bad as I had thought after reading those bad reviews about this movie, cos for one, I went with the mindset of watching it for fun, and it was a fun romp indeed. Heck, there were even a few genuinely touching scenes, kudos to the screenwriter for those few lines :-)

And Evil has never looked so dashingly good! I knew that the Mr. Doom guy was played by the actor from Charmed after being told by a friend, but what does it matter right? Everyone has their own past.. wait, what am I babbling here? :-P

The Thing's actor was cute in my standard, can imagine how difficult it must have been working under those heavy rock costumes. Also, was wondering how erm.. would his erm.. thing.. become when excited huh? Damn, too eager to find out!

Yea, I love Hollywood, sometimes.

Lost

Just in case you are lost here, I'm refering to the recent hit TV series 'Lost'.

Okaayy.. cheesy opening paragraphs aside, I have just finished watching the series few days back and it is simply the..

BEST. TV. SERIES. EVAR.

I mean, where can you find so much Korean quality drama (no kidding!), suspense, horror, intrigue, humour and mystique ALL rolled in one nice TV series based on a beautiful island? They even went all the way and threw in a hunky male lead who looks like a cross between Ben Affleck and Ben Browder, seriously what more can a giggly gay man like me ask for?

It's like a mix of Twilight Zone and the X-Files. I must say, I'm mainly drawn to the mystique side of the show, and sometimes it managed to build up a sense of horror so utterly intense I'm afraid to watch the show at night alone! I seriously feel that this series is way better than most self-claimed horror flicks mass produced from the east or the west!

Most of the times it is not what we see that scares us, it's what we don't see, and this series uses this to great effect.

Watching the plot unfolds reminds me a lot of the 'Wei Si Li' SF novels by HK novelist 'Ni Kuang', most of which gave me sleepless nights as the stories managed to conjure up horror by great atmosphere building and eerie characters/events.

Although this first season of the series is pretty much about endless suspense building and plot cliff-hangers rather than providing any satisfying answers, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and am looking forward to the second season which should be due sometime 4th quarter of 2005.

How I wish I was the one lost.. with Dr. Jake.

Initial D

Just for the record, I have never intended to watch this movie, let alone at the cinema, cos I was never a fan of the original comics and I am not a fan of any of the actors in the movie version either.

But whaddya know? Accident happens, and happen it did.

So after watching the movie, at the cinema..

Other than the slightly annoying attempts of Jay Chow trying too hard to be cool and look innocent (sorry JC fans!), I find that the casts are actually quite well assembled. For the first time I actually liked a character played by Edison Chan, which is no small feat by itself, lol.

Wanted to comment on the rest of the actors, but too bad I have no idea what their English names are, blame me on not following too much on the HK entertainment front :-P

The car racing scenes are of course the limelight of the whole movie, and they are really wonderfully executed, none of the typical HK fake CGI feel, all tyre screeches and angles of the car whooshing by felt real enough to me, and that alone is worth the price of the tickets. Really have to wonder how they managed to pull off all those dangerous stunts.

Call me a naive and uncool guy, but I do think such movies actually might influence youngsters to join car racing, not that we have such beautiful mountain roads in Malaysia :-P

I personally do not view casual car racing (and road speeders for that matter) in good light, so yea although I do agree this is an entertaining movie, I am somewhat concerned how much negative effect it might bring to the hot-blooded masses. Amen.
