Hmm.. a case of overhyping? Was really looking forward to this movie because of one name - Steven Spielberg.
Generally it was not a bad movie, just that.. it has too many annoying/unlikable characters, heck it even managed to make Tim Robbins unlikable for me (which is rare, cos I've always loved Tim no matter what role he was in).
I guess it probably wanted to show just how stupid humans can become upon facing such world-ending scale of catastrophy as depicted in the movie.
*** SPOILER ahead!!! ***
And the ending.. it's probably the best they could come up with seeing how they set up the enemy in the movie to be of so much more technological advanced and so absolutely over-powering to us until there was little hope to survive, much less defeating the aliens.
But the cheesy thing was not how the alien was defeated, but how the family seemingly got re-united in the end! Heck, even those 2 grandfather and grandmother also survived! I mean, I can understand Tom Cruise's character dodging miraculously all those shiny death-beams from the cool-looking tripods, but how in the world did the pregnant wife and the poor old father/mother-in-laws dodged them?
Well, think of it this way, at least it had a happy ending, so that after all those shots of the scary red/blood-vines terraformed eerie landscapes and the many hopeless scenarios presented in the course of the alien invasion, we can smile again, cos the family still got re-united in the end! Yay for us humans!
Ok ok, it wasn't so bad, afterall the movie is really about the invasion part and not how it ends. Still.. WHERE THE HELL IS THE FREAKINGLY COOL MOTHERSHIP??
